Teaching our students to cite sources and be responsible online citizens can be challenging to say the least. The attached book by Emily Puckett Rodgers and Kristin Fontichiaro can be very helpful in teaching your students about copyright, citations, and learning how to find images and materials. The Ninjaprogram.com website was started by technology advocate and educator, Jeff Utecht, author of thethinkingstick.com blog. The Ninja Program is geared towards educators and students. If you are in a Google Apps for Education school it can be overwhelming. Google has tons of great tools and options. Signing up for the Ninja Program can help manage the learning curve of all these great tools. What I like most is that it is geared towards education, specifically using it in the classroom. The module setup breaks it down into easy pieces. Getting "belts" and points for passing tests incorporates some great gamification tools that make it fun and incorporates some competition. Information management and literacy are such important skills for us to help our students understand. Module 1 in the Ninja Program will help you become a power searcher. The video below is a great overview of one of the resources that is introduced. Good luck grasshoppers! Click on the logo to go to the Big Huge Labs page (http://bighugelabs.com). The tools on Big Huge Labs can add some interesting twists to your projects and activities. Let your students create a customized magazine cover or billboard. Create "press" passes for your students. Let them create a jigsaw puzzle from any picture. Their are over 20 tools to use on this site. One of the biggest advantages of Big Huge Labs is the simplicity with which you can create your projects. Super simple to use and it is FREE. Check it out and have some fun. Long gone are the days of having to be a programmer to have your own website. New services make it relatively simple to create a very professional looking website or blog so you can easily communicate with your students, parents, and beyond. There are many options to choose from so we will narrow it down to 3 of the most accessible options. These are all free with options to do more for a small fee. You can accomplish everything you want and much much more with the free versions. 1. Weebly 2. Google Sites 3. Edublogs This blog and site are done with Weebly. The greatest advantage to Weebly is the ease with which you can create your presence. It has some very powerful features that you can incorporate without having to know a single thing about coding or html. If you want to create student blogs, Weebly will make this hassle free with the ability to create individual student blogs without having to use emails. Google sites are a great option because they can be setup with ease and if you are a Google Apps for Education institution like we are, you have some extra space and options available to you. You can create a site with lots of options and incorporate your other Google tools into it very easily (think Google Drive, Google Maps, Youtube, etc...). Edublogs is a blog host with tons of great features and options. One great advantage is that Edublogs is designed by and for educators specifically. This is a great article from the Educational Technology and Mobile Learning blog with tons of tips and tools to help make your website or blog even more useful.
Happy Halloween!
A tip and a resource to share from todays' Tech Thursday: 1. Use Google Calendar to setup appointment slots. This could be useful for setting up parent and student conferences on specific dates and times. The two minute video below will walk you through the steps for setting this up. http://www.googlegooru.com/how-to-create-and-reserve-appointment-slots/ 2. A scary topic for sure: How does a middle school brain work? http://www.edutopia.org/blog/middle-schooler-mind-how-brains-learn-heather-wolpert-gawron Click the image below to view the ChromeBook 101 presentation. Resources from the presentation: 1. GCF Learn - Tutorials on using Google Drive. 2. Google Edu Channel on Youtube - Videos on using Google tools in education. 3. 40 Ways to Start Using Apps in Schools The Ware County School District Instructional Technology website houses SMART Notebook lessons, Common Core units and lesson, tutorials, Schoology resources, and much more.
This Thursday session was spent reviewing the site's content and resources. From the Educreations webpage: Educreations is a recordable interactive whiteboard that captures your voice and handwriting to produce amazing video lessons that you can share online. Students and colleagues can replay your lessons in any web browser, or from within our app on their iPads. One of the many reasons Educreations was picked for our teachers was its simplicity. The iPad app is easy to pick up and use and if teachers want to create a class on the Educreations website they have some powerful features available all for FREE. This is a fantastic tool to use with students as well as having students creating their own lessons to show what they have learned.
Discussed the use of URL shorteners to make long website addresses easier to manage and share. This can be especially useful when trying to get a whole class of easily distracted and typing challenged students onto the same website. Many times these websites can have very long and complicated URL's. These tools will allow you to shorten a long web address into a more manageable link to share with others. The first two will also let you customize the link to make it even easier to remember and share: 1. IS.GD - Super simple. Paste the long URL into the text box and click shorten or you can customize to a name that you want (without creating an account). This tool will also give you a QR code that can be saved to your computer. The example below shortened this URL: https://sites.google.com/a/ware.k12.ga.us/wareteacher/ as well as creating a QR code. 2. J.MP - This is known as a jump site. Easily shortens URL's and if you create a free account you can customize them as well. This is part of the Bitly shortening service. Other shorteners that work well:
3. GOO.GL - from Google. 4. BIT.LY - Similar to #2 above. There are many others to choose from but these are some of the better ones. |
